We have a warning to heed today in the church. That warning is from our Lord Jesus Christ and we can't ignore it. Jesus warns us in Matthew 7:15 to beware of false prophets who come to us as if they were Christians but are not. They are really wolves intent on destroying Christians and the church.
This will be the first of several posts where I want to look at false teachers and prophets. Yes, they are in the church today. All you have to do is turn on your TV and you will find some of them.
To begin with, let's consider the following:
- Just because someone is on television or has written best-selling books doesn't mean they teach and preach the truth of God's word. We must evaluate their ministry and message to ensure it lines up with the Bible.
- Just because someones ministry is popular and has hundreds or thousands of members and followers doesn't mean they are not false teachers. Popularity does not guarantee truth! Popularity is not an indicator of God's blessing on a ministry.
Take a few moments to read and study the following verses along with Matthew 7:15 mentioned above.
- 1 John 4:1 Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world.
- 2 Peter 2:1 But there were also false prophets among the people, even as there will be false teachers among you, who will secretly bring in destructive heresies, even denying the Lord who bought them, and bring on themselves swift destruction.
We have Jesus' warning, as well as warnings from the Apostles John and Peter that the church will face the challenge of false teachers and prophets. They are out there and we need to stay away from their destructive heresies.
