On the night of January 13, 2012, the cruise ship Costa Concordia hit ground and sank. As it sank, one married couple faced a life changing decision. They only had one life preserver - who would use it? The husband decided he would sacrifice his life and give up the life preserver for his wife to use. By sacrificing his life, he gave life to his dear wife. After she was rescued, the wife said, "I owe my life to my husband."
That is a clear picture of what Jesus Christ did for us. He laid down His life so that we could have eternal life.
Consider these verses:
For He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him. (2 Corinthians 5:21)
For Christ also suffered once for sins, the just for the unjust, that He might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh but made alive by the Spirit. (1 Peter 3:18)
